Depending on where you stand in Irish Politics you refer to the city as Londonderry or Derry. In fact, as one drives towards the city, one will see spray paint riddled signs blocking out the word London to display only Derry. It seems Londonderry has similar issues as portions of Belfast. (See my Tour of a Lifetime post about the Belfast Troubles.) Murals depict the troubles front and center which I found beautiful and unsettling all at the same time. I can’t help but send light and good thoughts to the beautiful Irish people to find peace in their hearts for future generations.

How interesting..I did not know that about Londonderry/derry…thank you for your post.

I like the name stroke city! That mural of the boy with the petrol bomb is so emotive and haunting!
I remember the Troubles and how we were so scared of being blown up and sadly forty years on things haven’t changed that much in the world!

Sheesh. No kidding. Some of the troubles have moved and shifted but they are still with us. What does that say about human nature?

I used to change trains in Birmingham which was a favourite place for the bombers. My mum was always worried when I was on my way home for the weekend.

Thank you Jenny for a beautiful and… frightening post at the same time.
I may have mentioned it before, but I was under the impression that Ulster had “buried the hatchet”.
Doesn’t look quite like that right?
We shall paint ourselves blue and that’s it.
Cut the cr.p.
That is when I think we will never learn.
I remember an Irish friend a long time ago who told us that in Ulster, HR people were not supposed to discriminate against catholics, so they could not ask about religion. All they had to do was to ask. “Which school did you go to?” “Saint-Mary’s”. (Catholic) “Thank you for your time, we’ll give you a call”
😦

No, I do not believe the troubles are over with at all. Probably just different similar to everywhere else in the world right now.

Shame. Same story over and over again…
What plans do you and Eric have for the week-end? Does the weather still allow wandering outside?

It sure does. We will be in Mendocino for our anniversary!

It looks absolutely lovely. Close to Cape Horn, too. Pop. 824 so you will stick out.
A very happy anniversary to you, Jenny and to Eric. 🙂

Hahaha! Mexican post takes even longer for gifts. Most never make it through.
(Hope you had a lovely week-end near the Cape Horn)

Sure did. It was the best weekend in a very long time. Just the way it should be. Came home via Napa and the vines were in full fall bloom. Just gorgeous.

That could be a very dangerous trip sampling each variety. One would have to just drive. November? The vines have not been harvested yet? Interesting. that would be late in some regions in France, generally would be between sept and october. It all depends on the land, the sun exposure…But gorgeous it certainly must have been. Post something! 😉

Believe it or not we didn’t even stop in a single winery. We were on our long drive home and just admired the scenery by taking the long way home. We stopped for lunch/dinner in Calistoga which is at the far end of the Napa Valley.
The grapes have most definitly been harvested. Generally in September or so. Just the leaves on the vines are still yellow and red making them sensational. We just had a good amount of rain so I imagine the leaved are being knocked off as I type.
I hope to have some time to do some posting this weekend. I have been busy and work and tired. I have some posts in the “hopper” for you.
It is Thanksgiving for us tomorrow. There is a lot of food to be eaten and thanks to be given prior to the posting. I am thankful for you Uncle!

interesting…I’ve spent no time at all in this part of the world…maybe it’s time to visit?

Ireland and Northern Ireland are must see locations. But then again you probably already knew that from all of my posts.

I have a friend who is Irish, she has gone there a couple of times. But I’ve never been there, and never quite seem to make it…so keep posting…a vicarious visit is better than no visit!

I have a handful more left in the hopper for sure. Hoping to have time to finish them all by the end of the year. That means planning another trip there! (Or somewhere else…)
Where is your next trip?

Oh, I guess I have to go to the Maldives for Xmas. Apparently, somebody has to do it. The Traveler’s Handbook states that if someone goes to Ireland, somebody else must go to the Maldives. So it’s probably your fault.

Well, what happens when someone goes to the Maldives? Where do I get to go next?

No. The world does not work like that, girl. Cause and effect is never fair. When I go to Maldives, you must go to Pittsburg.

Pittsburg?! Bah! Well, they do have good Phillies cheese steak. I’ll make it work.
