Gold Country – Calaveras Jumping Frog Jubilee

I’ve lived my whole life in this area and always heard of Mark Twain’s famous Jumping Frog Jubilee.  I finally put it on the calendar and made a point of going.  I needed to see those silly frogs jump at the famous Calaveras Jumping Frog Jubilee in Angel’s Camp, California!

It turns out it was great fun to watch the kids “jockey” the frogs.  Some were creeped out and others fearlessly kissed their frog and sent it on its way.  Some jumped and bounced making me fear for the frogs life.  (Thankfully none were squashed/harmed while I was watching.)

The adults weren’t as much fun to watch as the kids but the length the frogs were jumping was far more impressive.  (Upwards towards 18 feet was the maximum I witnessed.)  The 30 year old record was made by Rosie the Ribiter at 21 feet 5 3/4 inches!  Other clever frog names include: Froggy Balboa, Joe Frogtana, and Hillary Croakin.

Small town festivals are a lot of fun.  I challenge you to tell me about a small town festival with a more interesting theme that jumping frog challenges!  🙂

  4. Haha, great festival and super images. The children seem to be really enjoying themselves. 🙂
    We have some quite random festivals in the UK and in Yorkshire a lot seem to be centred around food – throwing black pudding, rolling oranges through the streets or hurling cheeses down a hill. We even have a giant Yorkshire pudding boat race – yes, the boats you sit in are the Yorkshire puddings!

  16. Frogs are too slimy for me to touch. 😀 Plus, back when I was a kid, one of my playmates happened to get some sort of a skin disease after touching a frog. I was skeptical of frogs ever since. I’m happy just watching it. That looks so much fun for the kids though. Better play or see nature wonders than playing with technology all the time. 😉

  17. Hahaha, this looks like so much fun! The Bog Snorkeling Championships take place in Co. Monaghan every year, but that’s the best random local festival I can come up with… nothing beats jumping frogs! And their names are genius! 😂

  23. I Can’t top Frog Jumping or Rosie the Ribiter but when I used to go places; I’d stop for out of the way fairs and events I happened upon. Living in SoCal, for years I never missed the Doo Dah Parade in Pasadena or the Renaissance Faire out in the Malibu Hills and a couple of times in Devore.

    However I do go anywhere now…too old…to hot…been there done that.

    Now I’ll live vicariously through you. ~~dru~~
