Surprise! I went to Paris. I am back and have finally finished going through all of my photos. I hope to post some interesting finds over the coming weeks. I do hope you will enjoy my journey!
Cee’s Fun Photo Challenge gave me inspiration to share my first Paris photo. That of a very unusual building called the Centre Pompidou in the 4th Arrondissement near Les Halles. (Hadn’t really figured out how to start so thanks Cee!) I am not sure this building is to my taste but I give the architects bonus points for having the moxie to build something like this in Paris! The building houses a public library, center for music, and a Modern Art Museum. (Appropriate.)

France is truly one of the most beautiful countries I have ever visited. For other posts from previous trips to Paris and France please visit my page here!
It is an interesting building for sure. I remember the hype when it was first built and going to see it in 1979 or thereabouts!

We call the building “L’usine”. The factory. 🙂
Nice shot and angle.

I remember learning about this building in an architecture class. Someday, I hope to see it in person.

It’s pretty wild. I only learned today what was inside of it. (Library/art museum/music…) Makes more sense. There were also a lot of people that went to the top of the building for the view.

This was the first building that I learned of that had it’s “systems” (HVAC, plumbing, etc.) painted different colors. Anytime I see color coded systems, I think of this building.

And systems on the “outside” of the building.

I thought the Centre Pompideau was really interesting! (But maybe that’s because I’m a structural engineer…) The external escalator was a lot of fun to ride.

Awesome! I can’t wait to see more of your Paris photos, it really has been too long since I last visited! I saw the Centre Pompidou on my second visit, but I think it was largely closed for repairs. I heard that happens a lot!

Repairs? Wow. Shame. Did you go inside and visit the museum or anything? We didn’t have time as we were on our way somewhere else.

I think we were suffering from time constraints too, so we just looked at the outside. I still have a (pretty rubbish) photo of it though, taken with my ancient 35mm film camera… shows you how long ago that trip was 😆

Personally, I think it is an ugly building but it has a unique quality that draws viewers to it.

Great photo. I’ve been to the Pompidou Centre twice (many years ago) and it was amazing.

Thanks! It is certainly unique in a see of beautiful classic Paris architecture.

The concept of the building is that it is ‘turned inside out’. The exterior of the building is very distinctive and revolutionary, so I was excited to see inside. However, I found the interior very bland and oddly laid out – that is to say, if you are in a time crunch, don’t worry about getting inside.

Good tips! I did exactly that. We just walked on by it without going inside or on top. Perhaps another time.
