Its raining here cats and dogs at bulldog travels. So, I thought I would herald spring by sharing some photos of our famous California Poppy. Our state flower “pops” up everywhere in early spring and is a joy to see from the side of the freeway or climbing up the entire side of a hill or mountain. Does anyone else have a state or national flower that represents where they live like the California Poppy?
“All the spring may be hidden in the single bud, and the low ground nest of the lark may hold the joy that is to herald the feet of many rose-red dawns.”
-Oscar Wilde

Love your header photo. The poppies are so pretty and out in full force here in Arizona. When we called Colorado home, I loved the state flower, the columbine, when it would dot the hillside in various colors. So pretty!

Wonderful. I’m partial to those bluebells or whatever they are down in Texas too. But I don’t know if it’s the state flower or not.

I remember driving down to Las Vegas for a conference last year in march. The poppies and other wildflowers were all the way up and down the hills going over the Tahachapis. It was amazing. And the Joshua trees were in bloom too if memory serves.

Wow, really?! That’s very cool. Hey, do you guys get similar desert blooms after a wet winter? I would imagine so.

Yellow poppies. How nice. “Ours” in France and I imagine Europe, are red.
A flower symbol? The fleur de Lys (lilly?) was the symbol of the French monarchy and France for more than a millenium.
But I like yellow poppies. Very original.

They are cheerful happy flowers to me.

They look lovely. In France there were many of the red poppies in the wheat fields. Most are gone now because of pesticides. The last ones I saw were a few years ago in Auvers sur Oise, near the grave of Vincent and Theo Van Gogh.

They were probably planted there for that reason. I see them in photos all the time in England. They represent those lost in the military/wars I think???

That came after WWI. After a major battle in Gallipoli (?) where Aussies and “Kiwis” fought very bravely. The red poppy was picked up as a symbol.

We were always told we would go to jail if we picked them as kids.

Hi Jenny. Live on whatsapp, eh? Your parents were nature protectors early on. 🙂

Well, sort of. It was the 70’s and people weren’t as aware then.
It was more something they told us in school rather than my parents … Part of me thinks it’s still true.
I’ve always had a big heart for nature and animals. Can’t hardly squash a spider.

It is true. I remember hiking in the Alps in the ’70’s and there were already signs to not harvest mountain flowers, which are sparse.
(I squash scorpions, which we had a lot in the other house; I leave spiders alone because they kill scorpions) 😉

Seems entirely reasonable!

It is. And the best part is that most people seem to abide by the rule. I remember wild carnations. The flower is the size of a thumb, but has all the shape and colours of a carnation. Very delicate.

Hibiscus mostly. But you can spot small sunflowers and roses too.

It really is. One of the things it’s good to be reminded of which make this state amazing.
