While walking up to the Donner Train Tunnels from where we parked we were perplexed as to why there were perfectly manicured rock trails seemingly where there should not be any. We started poking around and realized we had walked right past some pretty epic petroglyphs. I say pretty epic because there aren’t a whole lot of them around this area. Apparently the area was knows as a region where various groups of American Indian groups would gather and trade. The petroglyphs were thought to have noted the meeting spots with meaningful images.

I’d say it’s a great place to meet and trade, right on the crest of the Sierras. 🙂 I have a photo of my mother and father near that spot in 1941, right after they got married! And I’ve started backpack trips near there at Lake Mary. But I have never seen those petroglyphs! –Curt

Signs of human presence always fascinate me. Humans carved out those sighns. For a purpose. A meaning to them. Centuries or even millenia ago. “Kilroy was here”. 😉
Happy New Year.

It would be interesting to know definitively what they were used for but we will likely never know.

I’m sure a few distinguished scholars in Native American studies have theories…

The sign said this particular place was a meeting place for groups to trade. It’s certainly possible and a good location for it.

Trade is the great pacifier. It is bad business to bang your clients on the head. They generally don’t come back. 😉
