Coit Tower is an important part of the San Francisco skyline. Sitting atop Telegraph Hill it juts up 210 feet sticking out from the buildings around it like a beautiful sore thumb. We will just pretend I am only 29 years old and say that I have been visiting SF for 29 years and have never gone all the way up to the top of the tower. Why? Who the heck knows. Well, I finally did it. And we did it right. We parked the car and had Uber take us up to the tower so we wouldn’t have to fight the traffic and parking problem. (There are about ten spots at the top of the hill! Only ten people!)
The art deco style tower is filled with murals. The murals were a public works project for local artists in the 1930’s. The murals have been rehabilitated and are a wonderful spectacle while you are waiting your turn to go up in the elevator. The murals tell the story of the bay area and California at large. While the characters in the murals are sometimes creepy they are certainly entertaining.
Once up at the top of the tower one fights one’s way through throngs of people taking selfies but the 360 degree view is totally worth it. Views of Angel island, Alacatraz, Treasure island, the Bay and Golden Gate bridges, and the City itself are to behold. When you are up in this tower it reminds you that San Francisco is truly the most glorious city in the United States. (Sorry NY but SF is pretty darn awesome on a nice warm, clear day.)
Put this on your SF must see list! Check out my other posts on SF here.
Those views! So gorgeous. I’ve never been to San Francisco but it’s one of the top US cities on my list (I’ve seen a lot of the East coast, living in Florida, but not much of the west). It’s all I can do to not book a long trip to escape the English winter.

Thanks for the comment. Be careful of the weather it is vastly different in SF compared to the rest of Ca. Mark Twain once wrote, “The coldest winter I ever spent was a summer in Sam Francisco!”

I have yet to visit SF but it is most definitely on my list. Hubby lived there for a short time (before meeting me in Chicago) Thanks for the lovely tour.

It’s a great city certainly worth a visit some day. Lots of energy and lovely views and great food…and traffic. 😉

Lovely indeed. As to the feud between NY and SF… Well, I love both, each in their own very personal way. 🙂
Thanks for sharing

Pretty views! The last time I checked Coit tower was closed for renovation, guess it’s open to public now. Should visit soon!

It’s totally open! They mentioned it was closed for a while during renovation of the murals. Perhaps that was when you visited?

Nice. Was he there after they rehabbed it?

I don’t know. The murals are beautiful though. He is interviewing 2 sisters whose father was one of the painters (and one is a subject in the painting).

One of my favorite places to go as a kid, even now as an adult. Spent a lot of time in SF as a kid. Definitely agree on the parking thing. Usually do the walking thing up to the top. At the top, always wondered how all the pennies and coins got on the ledges on the outside of the windows.

Amazingly enough this was the first time I went up in it. Drove and walked up there a bunch but never went in and up. It’s a cool place. Abe you been back since they remodeled?
