While attending a class at Trinity College in Dublin back in 1999 we experienced a solar eclipse above the bell tower. I didn’t own any fancy photo equipment at the time so this photo was taken whilst holding my sunglasses over my camera lens as a filter!

I remember watching this eclipse from a field at the back of my town in Devon, we had almost complete totality. My dad was so paranoid we’d go blind if we looked at the sun, I didn’t actually take pictures of the eclipse but I do have some of the people who were watching, they’re quite atmospheric with the daytime darkness

It must have been taken in 1999 because that’s when I was there for school. Does that sound about right?

Yes it was definitely 1999, I remember thinking it was an appropriate pre-millennium occurrence!

Great point. It doesn’t seem like that long ago but I guess it was.

Would the picture not have come out well if you hadn’t put the sunglasses over it? Or were you just trying to protect your eyes?

Both. Ha. But I think it would have been too bright. And I remember not being able to see anything without using my sunglasses.
