Old Soul Coffee in downtown Sacramento is participating in the Wide Open Walls 916 festival along with many downtown businesses. Lots of cars and signs were obscuring the wall so I took a few closeups of dragonflies which were my three year old son’s favorites. (He loves bugs right now much to his mother’s chagrin.) Put down your fly swatters these dragonflies are here to stay.

Parked cars are so annoying. Good shots though.
I’ve always marveled at the immense distance between the English word (dragonfly) and the French: Libellule… Wonder where our word comes from. Latin probably.
Such a pretty “bug”. Don’t touch them though. Some sting.

I am often intrigued by how many words are the same or at least similar in Spanish English and French and then how many are drastically different. Same with German and English I supposed which are supposed to be based off of the other. I have trouble seeing it some days.

Romance languages (French, Italian, Spanish, Portuguese and Romanian) are direct variations of Latin. English, German, Dutch and the Scandinavians are Germanic. Structure, vocabulary, etc. German has been influenced by Latin (declinations) Now, English is in-between, though its structure is Germanic (Saxon invasions to UK), 30 to 60% of its vocabulary comes from French. The Normands (ex-Vikings) brought the language along. And imposed it on the Saxons. Don’t get me started, it’s fascinating. 😉
